Design Process

The task for this project was to create an engaging and interactive eLearning lesson. The challenge was to use Michael Allen's magic keys to build the lesson. A scenario was provided with limited instructions to follow:

Provide a brief introduction of the origin of money to a group of kids who are 5-10 years old using a series of short videos. In this particular video, you want them to understand that people started to use commodity money due to the inconveniences of bartering (e.g. Lack of double coincidence of wants and so on). Your audience do not know much about this topic. You would like to engage your audience, get them interested in the topic, and understand the key idea.

The three key magic keys used were:

  1. Build on anticipated outcomes.

  2. Use an appealing context.

  3. Have the learner perform multi-step tasks.

The motivation theory taken into consideration to build an engaging experience were Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory, Individual and Situational Interest, and John Keller's ARCS Model.

For the design and development of the project, a script was written to assist in the video production build and voiceover.
